Community Stadium, the new state-of-the-art facility that will begin hosting high school football games Wednesday night, is using what Mother Nature and New Mexico has to offer and that's solar power.

Tyler Mason, the staff architect on the project from APS says the solar panels were always in the plans during construction.

With abundant sunshine in the Land of Enchantment, this grid will generate about 87 kilowatts of electricity at its peak, which can power up to 17 homes.

This large-scale project is expected to save APS up to $7,000 a year, which will go into the General Fund. The total price tag for Community Stadium: $28 million.

Mason stated that future solar projects for the district are expected, but on a smaller scale.
