RIO RANCHO -- Police arrested a 31-year-old father after a six-hour standoff in Rio Rancho on Wednesday night.

According to Rio Rancho police Sgt. Nicholas Onken, Juan Martinez was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse and domestic violence.

Officers responded to Martinez's apartment complex near Rainbow and Tulip for a violent domestic situation. When Martinez refused to open the door, police called a SWAT team to assist at the scene.

Residents at the scene said they heard several shots fired, but believed police were firing tear gas or pepper spray to get the suspect out of the apartment.

Martinez was taken into custody without incident around 10 p.m.
