After a year under new federal lunch guidelines, Bloomfield Schools District says the move has been successful, and credits that success to gradually increasing healthier options.
"We started several years ago, probably four years ago, introducing more whole grains into the meals of the students, vegetables and fruits as a way to get them ready for the changing nutritional requirements," said Gary Giron of Bloomfield School District.
At Mesa Alta Junior High, the students are warming up to the new menu.
"They're better than the lunches I had last year, they're pretty good. My favorite food is the pizza," student Bailey South said.
One of the ways the school has been getting kids to eat healthier foods is by offering different options. If they don't like one meal, they can have something else.
Today's choices were Salisbury steak or a spicy chicken sandwich with fruit and vegetables.
But a lot of the kids say getting used to broccoli is tough.
"I'm not just a really healthy kid as my sister says sometimes. I don't know it just tastes like... I don't know what it tastes like, but it doesn't taste good to me," student Emily Lucero said.
But even though they aren't eating their vegetables, the kids say they like the fresh fruit.
"I would rather eat fruit any day—vegetables don't have that nice sweet taste." Lucero said.
Yesterday, the USDA announced some schools around the country are dropping out of the new healthy federal lunch program.
Those schools say they were losing money because the students didn't like the new food and stopped buying school lunch.
