Thousands of UNM football fans will see something new at Saturday night’s first game.
No, the Lobos are not reviving the single-wing offense. And there won’t be any tofu hot dogs at the concession stands.
What’s new is a bigger and better scoreboard – with lots of live cameras and bells and whistles and doo-dads on its perch above the north end zone.
“It’s going to be the largest video scoreboard in the Mountain West Conference,” said Greg Archuleta of the UNM Athletic Dept. “It’s 32 feet by 80, which is about 20 feet longer than our previous scoreboard, and this is an all-video board.”
The scoreboard is part of the buzz in tailgate village, across the road in the Pit parking lot. People were already setting up their RVs Friday afternoon, and Rick Garcia was there first, as usual.
“You know what, I passed by the other day and I saw that they were putting up that new scoreboard,” Garcia said. “I’m just excited for a new season and I would love to see the Lobos excel!”
The new board makes its debut Saturday night when the Lobos take on UT San Antonio. Kickoff time is 6:07, and you'll want to buy your tickets before midnight Friday. That’s because they’re $5 more expensive on game day. You can make your purchase online at unmtickets.com.
