It's only one game into the season, but I'm still trying to figure out how MaxPreps determines their high school football rankings.
Rio Rancho was considered by many to be the preseason favorite. The Rams won their opener 59-14 against Highland. Manzano needed a last second touchdown to beat Volcano Vista on opening night. Las Cruces manhandled a very good El Paso Chapin program.
If you look at this week's MaxPreps rankings in Class 5A, they look like this:
If you take all classes into consideration, the MaxPreps rankings look like this:
I try not to put too much stock into rankings. Everyone has their own opinion. But I have to say something because those rankings will eventually help determine seeding come state tournament time. The NMAA uses the MaxPreps rankings as one of the criteria to seed and select teams for the state tournament. I'm not sure what formula MaxPreps uses to determine those rankings (maybe margin of victory or strength of schedule of opponents or alphabetical order for all I know). But the NMAA needs to get together with MaxPreps to determine a more accurate poll if they are going to use it as a tool to determine somone's postseason fate.
