Albuquerque Mayor Richard Berry is on the TV airwaves with a sizzling new ad that blisters his opponent, Pete Dinelli, for the way he ran a high profile city strike force a few years ago.

Are the ad's claims accurate? Like so many political ads nowadays, the answer is going to be yes – but – it's not the whole story.

"Pete Dinelli – a risky record," the ad begins. It rips Dinelli's performance as head of the safe city strike force, the team that shuts down meth labs, crash pads and wino flops. It uses a controversial video that strike force officers made about 5 years ago that features some highly unprofessional police conduct.

What the ad doesn't tell you is that Dinelli wanted the officers involved to lose their jobs, but he was over-ruled by Ray Schultz, who was then police chief.

The ad alleges "they went so far overboard the city was sued and forced to pay 1.7 million dollars."

In fact the city did settle a class action lawsuit for wrongful evictions that took place while Dinelli was in charge.

What the ad doesn't tell you is that the Berry administration settled that lawsuit and agreed to pay the money. Dinelli says the case should have gone to trial and the city should have defended itself.

So – overall – is this ad true? Yes - but – and that's about as good as it gets these days! Our recommendation? Take 'em all with a generous dose of salt!
