ALBUQUERQUE -- Albuquerque Public School officials tell KOB Eyewitness News 4 that a 7-year-old first grader has been suspended after a loaded gun was found in his backpack.

The incident happened Wednesday morning at Helen Cordero Elementary School. The student told a friend and a teacher he had a weapon in his backpack. The teacher looked in the backpack and found a loaded Glock.

A letter was sent home to parents of students at the school, saying the boy could face long-term suspension or expulsion, as well as legal action.

APS said the student did not indicate that he was going to use the gun.

It is not known at this time how the student got the gun.
