An Albuquerque treatment center is offering a rehab "scholarship."

It's basically a contest for people struggling with addiction, and the clinic says AMC's Breaking Bad inspired the idea.

A show about drugs might seem like an unusual inspiration for a rehab scholarship, but any addicts have trouble finding affordable help, and that's where one local clinic decided to offer an award - free outpatient therapy - for sharing the most personal story of all.

"If I relapse, I'll die from it."

That's the way one "Breaking Addiction" outpatient rehab scholarship essay begins.

"I want more than anything to be better."

It's just one plea from a New Mexican struggling with methamphetamine addiction.

Like the abandoned De Anza motor lodge on Central Ave. - a key location in Breaking Bad's season two - Julian Sutter says many Burquenos are locked up themselves.

"These are people who struggle with addiction and still go to work," said Sutter.

Sutter works for Sage Neuroscience Center. The recovery clinic is giving away two scholarships for typically expensive outpatient drug rehab. The program is called "Breaking Addiction." It's inspired by the show Sutter said starts a serious discussion.

"It depicts the down, the real bottom of the pit for a lot of people," said Sutter.

Sutter said simply applying is a step toward recovering. The contest is essentially an essay contest; applicants submit their personal addiction story.

"When somebody's able to write about their story, it shows they have the understanding they're ready to enter the program," said Sutter.
