Michael Shultz, 15, is charged in the shooting death of his 12-year-old cousin.

CARLSBAD -- A 12-year-old boy was shot and killed in front of his house on Wednesday night.

According to Carlsbad police, officers found Jeremy Hatfield with a single gunshot wound to the chest on North Olive Street.

Paramedics took the boy to Carlsbad Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

Police took Hatfield's cousin, 15-year-old Michael Schultz, into custody. Schultz told police Hatfield had pointed a toy pistol at him, so he pointed a handgun back at his cousin. According to police, Schultz said he thought he cleared the gun when he pulled the trigger and it fired, hitting Hatfield.

Schultz then told Hatfield's 14-year-old sister to tell police the incident was a drive-by shooting, according to the police report.

The family told police there was no bad blood between the boys.

Schultz has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, tampering with evidence and unlawful possession of a handgun. He is being held at the Eddy County Juvenile Detention Center.
