State leaders met on Saturday to discuss how New Mexico can better serve the needs of women veterans.

The conference included ideas on how to provide counseling for recently returned veterans.

They also looked at improving benefits like college training and burial entitlements.

"Women are a vital component of today's armed forces.  They have been serving alongside their male counterparts, soldiers, sailors, and airmen in combat zones such as Iraq, Afghanistan and other global hotspots,” said Governor Susana Martinez.

Saturday’s conference, at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque, was open to the public.
