Hundreds of New Mexico State University students are getting their federal student loan money late.

The school says that is to prevent more students from defaulting on their loans.

The Las Cruces Sun News reports that the university is withholding payments to about 900 first semester freshmen, until September 20th.

The reasoning is that many students drop credits in the first few weeks of school.

The delay gives the students time to decide if they really need all the money they requested.
