ELEPHANT BUTTE, N.M. -- A body was found in a vehicle washed out by heavy rains in Sierra County on Saturday.

According to New Mexico State Police, officers were dispatched to a dam site by the marina in Elephant Butte to investigate a vehicle covered in mud. State police Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez said a man was found dead inside. There were no other occupants.

Police believe the vehicle was washed down Ash Canyon off of S.R. 51. Sgt. Gutierrez said officers are working to identify the victim.

This is the first confirmed death after historic flooding hit several counties across the state on Friday.
