Early voting begins in Albuquerque

Voters are already casting their ballots in Albuquerque’s city election – even though Election Day is still almost three weeks away.

Wednesday was the first day of early voting at 12 election sites around the city – three times as many as we had in the mayor’s election four years ago.

Turnout in that election was about 85,000 voters – about 25 percent of those eligible to vote.  City elections just don’t draw the way a governor’s race or a presidential election will.

Still, we found city voters doing their duty on day one, casting their ballots for mayor, city council, and ten bond issues for various city projects and purchases.

“Everything was great,” said North Valley voter Jim Tilghman, moments after feeding his ballot into the tabulator. “I knew who I was going to vote for. The bond issues? I just kind of cruised through them – the library of course, the zoo of course – and then there’s that I had to read a little bit more.”

One thing to remember in a city of Albuquerque election nowadays – you need to have a photo ID.

“If it has your picture and your name on it we will accept it,” said City Clerk Amy Bailey, who is in charge of running the election. “That’s anything from a  driver’s license to a student or employee ID card. Even your Sam’s Club card or your Costco card will work. It’s got your picture and your name on it.”

Early voting goes on now through Oct. 4. Election sites are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For all the election information, visit the city clerk’s website.
