A local insurance agent said the new insurance rates, for individual plans under the state’s health exchange, appear to be affordable.

The 4 On Your Side team asked Jesse Dompreh to weigh-in on the exchange before its scheduled launch on October 1.

“To some extent, yes, I am nervous,” he said of the exchange’s implementation.

He said he’s still learning how the exchange works, just as others said they’re confused.

“I think it’s very complex,” Sandy Pollock, a nurse, said.  "I think our rates are going to go up, I think they're going to skyrocket.”

4 On Your Side found that a 30-year-old single person in Albuquerque, who doesn’t use tobacco, could pay anywhere between $137 and $279 per month for eight different plans.

Dompreh cautioned New Mexicans to fully review the plans before making a decision on which to choose.  He said people who have insurance through their employer should likely stick with it for now.

“Just stay with that until this whole thing is unraveled and you know what and how that can benefit you,” he said.
