Drought ruins popular, would-be corn maze

Organizers of the Rio Grande Community Farm said drought sidelined much of their business for the first time in nearly 20 years.  Now, they’re seeking donations through an online fundraising site.

Every year in the fall, the farm creates a maze through acres of its corn.  This year, the drought forced them to plant less corn.  Of the corn they planted, much of it is only a few feet high.

“If your average person is a little over five feet tall, the average person will be able to see through most of this maze,” organizer Jamie Phillips said.

He’s envisioning what would have been an elaborate maze.  Instead, he and his fellow organizers will craft a mini-maze, mainly for children.

“Normally, we have six to ten-foot stalks of corn,” Phillips said.

Nearly 10,000 people visit the farm every year, he said.  This year he’s hoping to attract at least a fraction of that and account for the projected losses.

“That’s a huge portion of our revenue,” Phillips said.

Phillips and the other organizers turned to Indiegogo.com to start a fundraising campaign that lasts through the end of October.  They’re hoping to raise $25,000 to cover a large portion of their operational expenses in 2014.

Although the maze will not amount to what is usually does, Phillips said the farm will still host its fall festival and soon create a small maze in days and weeks to come.
