A school board member in Albuquerque launched a campaign to overturn education reform measures implemented by New Mexico’s Public Education Department.

“As a board member, I've expressed my frustrations, I've expressed my concerns, I've expressed my anger both individually and with my fellow board members, and we've been absolutely ignored,” Kathy Korte said.

After a recent town hall meeting with educators, Korte said parents approached her to express their frustration.

She said they criticized new state-mandated testing put into place to measure a student’s performance at the end of the school year.  She also criticized how the results could impact new teacher evaluation procedures.

Korte spelled out her concerns in an email to parents in her district.  The Public Education Department, or PED, responded to each concern.  You can read her concerns and the PED's responses by clicking here.

A spokesperson with PED said the end-goal of the new measures is to improve student performance in New Mexico – a state that hasn’t ranked well nationwide.

The Albuquerque Teachers Federation has spoken against the new teacher evaluations ever since they were implemented at the beginning of this school year.

Korte’s organizing a letter-writing campaign to legislators to encourage them to take the education reform measures out of the hands of the state, and into the hands of parents and teachers.  She said PED has too much control over individual school districts.

Additionally, Korte wants parents and teachers to attend a rally at Del Norte High School on Tuesday, October 22 at 5 p.m.  For more information: https://www.facebook.com/groups/District2/
