It's the end of the road for the only Democrat who was brave enough to challenge a very popular incumbent mayor.

Pete Dinelli had an uphill battle the entire time. Richard Berry's approval ratings were high going into the mayor's race. The numbers scared off other Democrats, but Dinelli thought he had a shot.

Even when poll after poll showed Dinelli in a distant second place, Dinelli still attended every debate he was invited to, spoke at every event he could, and tried to convince Albuquerque why he was the better candidate.

In the end, he would lose by a wide margin.

"I want to extend Mr. Berry my very best wishes as he embarks on another four years. I do want to thank from the bottom of my heart every individual that's here today for all their hard work. You could go through life saying, shoulda coulda woulda, but the fact is I made the commitment, I made the run, I got in the arena and the fact is we fought a good fight," Dinelli said.

What's next for Dinelli? He's retired and says he plans to enjoy that for now.
