The state Motor Vehicle Division has been bombarded with rumors and reports that New Mexico is on the verge of discontinuing its popular turquoise and yellow license plates. State officials tell us those rumors and reports are absolutely positively false, no matter what you may hear from employees at MVD Express or any other private MVD contractor.

One Taxation and Revenue Department official told us that if they stopped issuing the turquoise plates, there would be an armed rebellion in the streets – and he was only half-kidding. That’s how popular they are.

“The turquoise is the only one I like,” said Estelle Duggan, visiting from Idaho for the Balloon Fiesta. “It stands out. It says ‘the Southwest’ to me. Yep, you know that’s New Mexico without reading it!”

There are those who prefer the good old “enchilada” plate – that’s yellow cheese and red chile, right? It’s still an option, and then there’s the old balloon plate.  Of course, the turquoise plate isn’t for everybody.

“I think it’s ugly,” said Meeka Gamble of Albuquerque. “I don’t like it at all. I don’t like the color. I don’t like it at all. I prefer the balloon one.”

The state started issuing the turquoise plates in 2010, two years ahead of the 100th anniversary of New Mexico statehood. That was in 1912, which was also the first year for New Mexico license plates.
