When our team of reporters is working on a story like this, we look for opportunities to get inside information.
We found a phone number for Scott Chandler's mother, so we called it. We got quite an earful.
"The police were here on the ranch and I think they will tell you we have the most rundown ordinary lives. Every room in my house has been gone through and I don't mind, I really don't, I have nothing to hide. But it grieves me that you are painting Scott like you are and you really are not being fair," Kay Chandler said.
Scott Chandler's mother Kay Chandler told me she's upset with the way I aggressively questioned her son about the abuse allegations.
Chris Ramirez: This is me wanting to know what happened to those boys whose faces were beat to a pulp.
Scott Chandler: All I can say is--we my staff did not do that.
Chris Ramirez: So who did?
Scott Chandler: I'm not going to comment on that.
Chris Ramirez: So it wasn't Harold you're saying? Even though all the police reports that we have say that it was Harold.
Chris Ramirez: So the question I have for you is: How can the Governor, or State Police, or CYFD get in touch with Scott and those boys?
Kay Chandler: Truly, I don't know. I was just told that all the parents are coming to get their children and they are all being instructed that's all I can tell you. I haven't talked to my son and it grieves me. But Chris can I tell you something, are you listening?
Chris Ramirez: I'm on the phone and I'm listening to you.
Kay Chandler: Scott could not have done these things you are accusing him of. Scott has a rare bone disease called dysplasia. He's sick much of the time and there is no way he would have the time, energy or desire to do any of these things.
A point of clarification: As a reporter, I don't make accusations.
In this case, all facts and accusations that we've reported have come from CYFD and law enforcement documents.
We invited State Police to listen to this entire conversation and even gave them a copy of the recording at their request.
