There is a new park in the works that will be custom made for children and families with disabilities in Rio Rancho.

There was a street party to celebrate the park on Saturday, along with a car show, music and food.

The park sits on approximately six acres of land owned by the city of Rio Rancho.

The playground will have swings that accommodate wheelchairs.

There will also be basketball courts and shaded areas.

Governor Susana Martinez was on hand for the ground breaking.

Families say this was very important for the community.

"All these guys could do was sit and watch their other brothers and sisters play,” parent Patrick Gonzales said. “You know, and it was really difficult to see them to where they…all they can do is watch and wish they could join."

The park will be on Westside Boulevard just off of Unser.

It was funded mostly by capital outlay funds from Governor Martinez.
