A YAFL football team banded together to help a family that is going through a tragedy.

The team held a football game at Bullhead Park near San Pedro and Gibson where they honored the family of two young boys.

Their mother was fatally stabbed to death.

Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Deputies say Jerry Chavez stabbed and killed his estranged wife, Sandra Ferrales, last weekend.

Deputies say the two young boys saw the incident occur.

One of them made the 911 call.

"He’s trying to get back to normalcy. Normalcy is what he loves, and what he loves is being on our football team where he can contribute. He's got his teammates here," Head Coach Ron Sandoval said.

Ferrales will be laid to rest on Monday at Legacy Church on Central.
