A road construction project in the Four Corners has hit a roadblock, and now work that was supposed to be finished in December has hit a major setback.

Some store owners in Aztec say the construction project is costing them business.

"I can't open up, there's no way to get in to the building, no way to get out of the building, they got my driveway torn up," said Rod Foss, owner of Unique Furniture in Aztec.

"We're manufacturing high purity water about 8/10 of a mile up the road and all of our routes are based on time. And the terminal delays we're feeling at the stop light have really impacted us for months on end," said Joe Williams of Hydro Pure Technology.

The project at Aztec Boulevard and Light plant Road started last month. It was supposed to be finished this winter, but crews hit a snag.

"When the project got under construction we encountered some underground utilities that no one knew were there," said Paul Brasher, engineer for the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

The project was scheduled to be finished this December but due to unmapped utility lines the project won't be able to be finished until next spring.

It's an answer some aren't too happy about.

"Well they're here, why don't they finish it? If they come back in February or March then I’m down for six months next year. It just sounds like it was poorly planned to me," Foss said.

During the suspension of the project, DOT plans to open up traffic to two lanes and temporarily pave the intersection until they can finish it in the spring.

Crews will actually have to stop working on the project in December. Because of the cold temperatures they won't be able to start paving the road until March.

Crews hope to have the project done by May.
