The University of New Mexico men's basketball team is ranked 20th in the USA Today Preseason Coaches Poll.

Kentucky is the preseason favorite followed by Michigan State and Louisville.  UNM opponents Kansas (6th) and Marquette (17th) are also ranked.  Steve Alford's UCLA squad is ranked 23rd.

"It's great to be called a top 20 program before the season starts," said UNM's Alex Kirk.  "It's great to be picked to win the conference but now we have to prove we are that team."

UNM point guard Hugh Greenwood isn't worried about any added pressure that comes with starting the season nationally ranked.  "We were ranked a lot last year and we dealt with that pressure well," said Greenwood.  "To be ranked going into the season is different, but I think we'll be fine.  Players wouldn't be here otherwise if they couldn't handle the pressure."

UNM will start the season November 2nd with an exhibition game against Eastern New Mexico.  The first regular season game is November 9th against Alabama A&M.
