The 30th annual Duke City Marathon will kick off on Sunday and safety will be a bigger focus in the wake of the Boston Marathon Bombings.

"We want to assure everybody that we're taking every step we can to make sure that runners and walkers are safe and have a great day on race day," Duke City Marathon organizer Burt Trembly said.

There will now be an evacuation plan for all emergency responders and there will also be a minimum of one ambulance and eight EMT’s on site.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office is taking the lead on security this year, with help from the Albuquerque Police Department.

40 deputies will be assigned to the event and video surveillance will also be used.

The Duke City Marathon is a qualifier for the Boston Marathon.
