An Eastern New Mexico peanut butter plant, involved in a nationwide salmonella outbreak, had apparently been considering filing bankruptcy for months.

Sunland Incorporated shut down earlier this month, after filing for bankruptcy.

The Portales News Tribune reports that Sunland’s board approved resolutions to start bankruptcy proceedings back in April.

The board says it hoped until recently that it could keep the company open.

Sunland was never able to recover from 2012’s salmonella outbreak that sickened more than 40 people in 20 states.
