A proposal before the city council on Monday would rename an Albuquerque park after a young girl who was killed while riding her bike.

Trails Park in Northwest Albuquerque would be called “The Hailey Ratliff Trails Park.”

Ratliff was hit and killed on her way home from school last year in California.

Ratliff and her family had just moved to California from Albuquerque.

The park is on Rainbow Road north of Tony Hillerman Middle School, where Ratliff used to go to school.

Supporters say many students walk and bike to and from school along Rainbow Road.

They hope the name change will remind drivers to watch for children.
