SANTA FE (AP) - Santa Fe's police chief says his officers appear to be misusing sick leave to sabotage his decision to have officers work five days a week instead of four.
The Santa Fe New Mexican reports that officers' use of sick leave increased 30 percent since the work-week change was made in the 2011-2012 fiscal year.
Chief Ray Rael told a City Council committee Monday that some sick-leave usage is intended to make it appear the five-day work week isn't working, but he acknowledged he has no proof.
City Councilor Chris Rivera expressed disbelief that Rael would make the accusation and the president of the police union called the allegation baseless.
