ALBUQUERQUE -- Early voting in Albuquerque's special election and runoff starts at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.

The controversial and possibly history-making issue on the ballot is the late-term abortion ban. If passed, Albuquerque would have the first municipal abortion ban in the country.

There are a couple of groups for and against the issue who have been speaking out to voters, especially when it was first introduced. Respect ABQ Women launched a campaign in August working to keep the issue off the ballot. Many people against the ban felt it shouldn't be up to voters to decide.

One group for the ban, Project Defending Life, submitted thousands of signatures to the city clerk to get the ban on the ballot. In September, the city council approved a special election for the ban.

District 7 voters will also vote for their councilor today, either Diane Gibson or Janice Arnold-Jones.
