An Albuquerque man badly burned in a balloon crash earlier this month continues to recover from his injuries.

Daniel Lovato was a crew chief riding in his pilot’s balloon – the “New Mexico Sunrise” – during the Balloon Fiesta when it slammed into power lines on the southeast side of Rio Rancho.

Lovato suffered serious burns on his face, chest and arms. Doctors had to amputate his left arm. So far he’s had eight surgeries, mostly for skin grafts on the burn wounds. The skin comes from other areas of his body. Friends say most of the grafts have taken well so far. Lovato was scheduled for another surgery on Wednesday.

Pilot Mark Kilgore of Albuquerque was also burned and injured in the accident, but not as severely as Lovato. The crash is still under federal investigation.
