With peak flu season right around the corner, many are getting a flu shot.

But it is hard for those cannot afford one or are too busy.

UNM Hospital holds several free, flu shot clinics around the city every year.

Today, it held the last clinic.

But will any more free events be added?

For many, a trip to a University of New Mexico health clinic has become routine in the yearly fight against the flu.

The Lobo Clinic was busy Saturday morning.

It hosted the last, free flu shot clinic of the season for UNM Hospital.

The hospital held six events this year.

The first was in September.

The flu shot takes about 14 days to activate.

Many people take advantage of a free, shot.

“We get them for different reasons,” said Cara Davenport, director of the Lobo Clinic. “One, for not being able to afford it. The other is people not being able to go to their providers, their primary doctors, during the week. Their kids are in school. They're at work. Theses Saturday clinics give them an opportunity to come in and not have to miss work and not have to pull the kids out of school.”

Flu season can start anytime.

Davenport says they have seen positive influenza cases in the metro since September.

The flu, says Davenport, usually spikes in January, February and sometimes into March.

Last January, UNM-Hospital decided to add more clinics because of demand.

But it is too early to know if that will happen again this upcoming January.

“They wait until the last one, of course today, then they will gather their numbers and look and see if we need to have more clinics. Are we having more people requesting it,” said Davenport.
