A toddler was found roaming the streets in Hobbs.
Police said she was unbathed, with a dirty diaper and matted hair.
But as KOB Eyewitness News 4 found out, where the little girl was coming from was a lot worse.
Over the weekend, Hobbs Police got a call about an infant on the side of the road.
“We found a little girl, about maybe a year to 18 months old just wandering in the street,” said neighbor Cynthia Gonzales. “It’s just sad the little girls not even two and she's running the streets in a diaper with no shoes on.”
Neighbors were able to track down the mother, Kristal Adams. The mother told police she was at a friend’s house. When police looked in the house, they turned their investigative attention on the mother.
Police said they found 20 used methamphetamine syringes within the child's reach.
And that wasn’t all they found.
Hobbs Police said dog and cat feces were found in every room of the house, pornographic magazines out in the open, and no children’s supplies could be found anywhere.
“The people over there were doing drugs or what not in that house across the street," said neighbor Oliver Madkins.
Neighbors said they knew something was wrong.
“I don't know what they're doing, that's none of my business, but it is my business when I see a child lost in the streets," said Madkins.
Kristal Adams and her boyfriend Charles Brown have been charged with child abuse. The two-year-old child is in CYFD custody.
“I don’t think it’s right for them to just not pay attention to their kids," said Madkins.
Police said the mother confessed that she and the boyfriend were meth users. She admitted using the drug for over 15 years.
