Most of us take getting a haircut for granted, but for children with autism, it can be a stressful experience.

Today, 12-year-old Jacob is getting his hair cut.

He has autism spectrum disorder, and sometimes getting a haircut can be difficult.

Bright lights, product smells and sounds like blow dryers and scissors can be irritating, but today's experience is different.

The New Mexico Autism Society organized sensory snip is where people with autism can come and get a haircut without distractions.

"It gives families a chance to do something that is otherwise uncomfortable because taking your child to get their hair cut is often times difficult because of sensory needs of a child," said Sarah Baca, Executive Director of the NM Autism Society.

The quiet environment helps put Jacob at ease, and unlike a regular salon visit, Jacob is the only client.

Not only will visitors be in a calm environment but it also gives them a chance to set up a routine with their stylist, something that's important for people with autism.

"They get to know the person they're familiar with the environment," said Baca.

This experience is something Jacob’s mom hopes will stick with her son.

"he can go in even if it’s not the same place he can be conformable enough to go into another salon or a barber and express what he needs," said Sarah Shelby.

The New Mexico Autism Society is planning another sensory snip its event in Rio Rancho.
