CHAPARRAL, N.M. (AP) — A Chaparral man is accused of felony negligent child abuse after his 4-year-old son was left unattended in a minivan.

Dona Ana County Sheriff's deputies say 30-year-old Eleazar Macias is being held on a $10,000 surety bond.

A security guard working at the Chaparral branch of Dona Ana Community College reportedly saw the boy crying and notified authorities.

Macias went into the campus computer lab around 3 p.m. Wednesday and the security guard reported seeing the boy in the minivan about an hour later.

According to court documents, Macias admitted to leaving the boy alone because he needed to get his homework done.

Authorities say the boy's grandmother picked up the child, who was unharmed.
