No. 19 New Mexico escapes in double OT, 97-94

It was an instant classic in Charleston.

Kendall Williams hit a 3-point shot as time expired and sent No. 19 New Mexico into overtime against UAB. Alex Kirk hit another last second shot to send the game into double overtime.

In the end, New Mexico (3-0) won 97-94 to move forward to play UMass tomorrow in the winner’s bracket of the Charleston Classic.

UAB (3-1) overcame a first half deficit to lead the Lobos by as much as 6 points with just 2 minutes left in regulation and took a 5 point lead with under a minute to play in the first overtime.

Williams led New Mexico with 29 points and 10 assists. He dished the ball to Kirk at the top of the key with 5 seconds left in the first OT, just a few feet away from where Williams hit his game saving bucket.

Kirk fouled out in the second overtime, he had 16 points and 11 rebound.

Cameron Bairstow played aggressive for the Lobos on offense. Although he fouled out before regulation ended, he finished 21 points and 8 rebounds.

UAB did not have trouble scoring against the Lobos.

Chad Fraizer led all scorers with 34 points. Rod Rucker had 18 points and grabbed 20 rebounds.

Despite the 3-point heroics, New Mexico shot poorly from long range. Just 8-38, with half of the baskets made by Williams.
