A Four Corners group says it has seen a disturbing increase in reports of sexual abuse cases involving children.

For the past ten years, Sexual Assault Services of Northwest New Mexico has been helping victims of sexual assault by providing exams counseling and prevention education.

This year they've seen a higher number of child sexual abuse cases.

"Last year we did 60 exams on people under the age of 18 and we've almost surpassed that at the end of November," said Eleana Butler, executive director.

So when they found out they would be moving into a bigger office, they also wanted to hire more people to deal with this trend.

The center has been able to hire a counselor and two prevention educators.

The center says having an in house counselor helps people feel more comfortable.

"They connect with us, so what we were hearing is that they would go to another counselor but really they were asking if they could get services here," said Butler.

With the help of two new prevention educators, they'll have more hands to reach out to the community

"Now were able to do a lot more prevention education particularly with young kids all the way through high school."

The center says they hope to continue to add staff to keep spreading awareness.

Sexual assault Services does not think the statistics indicate more sexual assaults are happening in the four corners.

They think more people are coming in for their services.
