The Sandoval County Sheriff's Office is releasing new information about a deputy who was hit by a vehicle on I-25 NB near San Felipe Casino on Thursday morning.

The Sandoval County Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Robert Baron was out of his patrol car directing traffic around a crash scene when a vehicle lost control and struck him around 10:30 a.m.

Sgt. Baron was transported to University of New Mexico Hospital for treatment and is currently in the ICU. Authorities say he's in a medically-induced coma and in critical condition. Sheriff Doug Wood and members of the Sandoval County Sheriff's Office say they are standing vigil with Sgt. Baron, his wife and their 10-year-old son.

The deputy is an eight-year veteran of the force.
