An Arizona inmate will spend the rest of his life behind bars for killing a couple in New Mexico in 2010.

A federal jury announced Wednesday they did not reach a unanimous sentencing decision for John McCluskey. That means the judge will sentence him to life in prison for killing Gary and Linda Haas, a couple from Oklahoma who was traveling through New Mexico on their way to a camping trip.

Jurors were tasked with deciding whether or not he would receive the death penalty.

McCluskey had just escaped from an Arizona prison when prosecutors said he targeted the Haases at a rest stop and shot them to death in their camper.

The defense described McCluskey as a man who suffered from a mental disorder and abusive past.
