Friday the 13th may turn out to be a really lucky day for somebody – maybe even somebody from right here in New Mexico.
The Mega Millions lottery is up to $425 million and tickets in Albuquerque were selling like crazy. We caught up with customers lining up at one of several convenience stores that people consider lucky locations because of winning tickets bought there in the past.
“You gotta be in it to win it,” David Free said after buying a few tickets at L&M gas station at San Mateo and Candelaria N.E. “I feel lucky every day but today is a luckier day – Friday the 13th – lucky! We’ll switch it around and make it all lucky!”
“I’m hoping it’s the lucky one,” said Cranston Horne, clutching a single ticket he bought for $1 at L&M. “I feel lucky today. It feels like a good day, Friday the 13th. I’m hoping!”
A lot of us don’t mind shelling out a buck for a chance to win 425,000,000 of them – but your odds of doing that are pretty slim. It used to be one in 176,000,000. In October Mega Millions changed the rules and your chance of winning is now one in 259,000,000. Some of us can already feel our wallets expanding.
“It’s a lot of money,” said L&M customer Mike Gurule. “God, that would be so nice to win it. When I win it I’m going to help out all my family if that would be possible.”
A guy can dream, right? Gals too. Without dreams, the lottery would probably just shrivel up and blow away. The drawing is scheduled for 9 p.m. Friday night.
