The knockout punch came in the second round.

No. 13 Kansas opened the second half on 16-4 run en route to a 80-63 win over New Mexico.

Andrew Wiggins had 11 points and Perry Ellis scored 21 points and 9 rebounds for the Jayhawks (7-3) in the win at the Kansas City Classic.

New Mexico (7-2) head coach Craig Neal said early in the week the Jayhawks would go for a first round knockout against his team.

New Mexico ducked and weaved to a 39-38 deficit at the half.

Most of it came without center Alex Kirk who sat on the bench with foul trouble. Kirk picked up minutes in the second half, but was slow to get into the flow of game while he faced early double and triple team coverage from the Jayhawks.

He fouled out with less than three minutes in the game with 5 points and 5 rebounds. Kendall Williams created a four point play off the fourth foul on Wiggins to bring the Lobos within five points with just over eight minutes to play.

But Kansas went on a 17-5 run to close out the Lobos.

Joel Embiid scored 18 points and grabbed 6 rebounds or the Jayhawks.

Cameron Bairstow scored 24 points and grabbed 6 rebounds for the Lobos. Williams also finished with 24 points.
