Approximately 20 people who work for a behavioral development center in Roswell said they went to pick up their paychecks on Friday only to find out they weren’t getting paid.

Just over a week from Christmas, some Roswell workers got an unpleasant surprise.

Instead of getting their regular paychecks, they found a note posted on their employer’s front door that read, “Payroll is not available at this time.  We will contact all employees as soon as funds are available.”

"I was in total shock," said employee Sarah Candelaria.  She said Esperanza Developmental Services was already scheduled to close its’ door on Friday, but employees who put in shifts taking care of the disabled expected to get paid.

“Rent was due Sunday, and I had plans to pay my rent with that money and now I don't know what to do," said employee Bianca Rivera.

“Well, I’m very stressed out because that's my rent, that's to take care of my daughter, that's for me to basically get by," said Charles Macias.  He said he still hasn’t been paid for 83 hours of work.

“Roughly they owe me, I want to say about $2,000-3,000," said Macias.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 stopped by Esperanza Developmental Services Monday to find the front doors locked and the parking lot empty.

Employees said they have not been contacted and don’t know when or if they will ever see the money.

"That was the bills that I was going to pay, the last of the little Christmas we were going to have, just left with nothing,” said Candelaria.

Monday afternoon, there was a new development.  Employees tell KOB they started getting late paychecks.  But at least one worker said he’s still owed overtime.

When contacted by phone, the owner of the business refused to answer questions.
