FARMINGTON, N.M. -- A social media blunder lead to the arrests of three people in a Farmington murder.

Farmington police learned about the murder of 39-year-old Randy McKenzie after his sister made a shocking discovery online.

"She had learned of posts that were made on Facebook regarding her brother being missing and possible killed," said Georgette Allen, spokesperson for the Farmington Police Department.

She immediately she notified police, sparking an investigation.

Facebook posts and an anonymous tipster led police to the whereabouts of three people that were believed to be involved in McKenzie’s disappearance, as well as the location of his body."

Sabrina Pacheco and Angel Mares were arrested after they attempted to run away from police during a SWAT situation. They have both been booked on tampering with evidence charges.

The third suspect, Mark Hinojos, was arrested for second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.

Police say social media has become increasingly useful in investigations because people like to posts all their thoughts and feelings—even if it gets them in trouble.

"It's not safe to post everything on social media because again, once it's out there, its hard to get it removed," Allen said.

According to court documents, a witness saw Hinojos shoot McKenzie in Pacheco's garage. Pacheco was hosting a party at her house at the time.

Police say they still don't know the motive.
