A man shot by a Los Lunas police officer during a SWAT situation will face several charges after he is released from the hospital, New Mexico State Police confirm.
The incident began as a domestic disturbance call at a home on Highway 314 last Thursday. Witnesses at the scene told police a man attacked a woman before barricading himself inside the home. They told police the man was heavily armed.
During the situation, state police said Los Lunas officer John Valdez saw the suspect, Reuben Sanchez, pointing an object that looked like a rifle in their direction. Valdez fired one shot and hit Sanchez in the chest, according to state police.
After Sanchez is released from UNM Hospital, he will face three charges in Los Lunas Magistrate Court, including battery against a household member, resisting arrest and interfering with communications.
Police have not yet confirmed whether or not the object Sanchez was holding was indeed a weapon.
