LAS VEGAS, N.M. -- New Mexico State Police have released the identity of a wrong-way driver shot by officers on I-25 on Saturday night.

State police have charged 72-year-old Albert Urban of Hamburg, N.Y., with two counts of aggravated assualt on an officer and aggravated fleeing.

The incident began as a police chase near Las Vegas, N.M. State police officials said officers pursued Urban as he drove the wrong way on I-25 southbound. They attempted to deploy stop sticks and pushed his vehicle off the freeway, but police said Urban kept driving.

"The driver of the vehicle aggressively drove toward one of our officers, so shots were fired," Sgt. Damyan Brown said. "He did suffer gunshot wounds. Unknown how many or what the severity was."

Urban is listed in stable condition at the University of New Mexico Hospital. State police plan to book him into the San Miguel Detention Center on a $100,000 bond after he is released.

No officers were injured in the incident.
