Record-breaking cold snap spreads across US

(NBC News) -- A brutal winter cold snap has much of the United States in its grip, and conditions are worsening.

Temperatures are 30 to 50 degrees below average in the Midwest, and 25 states have thermometers sitting at zero or below.

Officials are pleading with people to stay indoors and off the streets in many of the coldest cities.
