Natural gas is big business for the Four Corners.

One group in the Four Corners wants to bring compressed natural-gas stations to the area, but first they'll need support from local government.

Four Corners Economic Development is looking into how successful compressed natural-gas stations would be in the four corners area.

"It’s definitely doable and I would do it," said Ray Hagerman from Four Corners Economic Development.

Farmington used to have one gas station that served eco-friendly cars. That station closed several years ago, but the Four Corners economic team hopes new technologies will create a high demand for this kind of station.

Currently the development group is talking with several government officials in the area to see if using these stations would benefit them.

"I think you will see that, folks will either be converting to CNG or some buying brand new units."

The city of Farmington says they'd be interested in converting some of their vehicles to compressed natural gas if it's easily accessible.

"If it’s available what we’re looking at right now is 10-15 percent of the fleet in the next five to six years," said Julie Baird, director of General Services.

Four Corners Economic Development would like to see two to three stations come to the four corners by the end of the year.

"This is where the future is going to be in burning clean fuels and we are generating a lot of natural gas, lets figure a way to use what we are producing,"  Hagerman said.

There are currently four compressed natural-gas stations in New Mexico. Prices range from $0.60 to $2.60 a gallon.
