LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - Students at New Mexico State University's College of Health and Social Services have launched a new organization focused on mental health issues.
School officials announced this week that the new National Alliance on Mental Illness campus chapter received its official charter at the end of the fall semester.
The club has elected officers and plans to host a kickoff celebration this spring.
Faculty adviser Ruth Burkhart says the chapter will provide education as well as support for those with a mental illness, their families and communities.
The chapter can also take advantage of resources offered by other local and state NAMI groups. For example, the Dona Ana NAMI group offers a 12-week course every spring and fall for family education.
