Details are emerging about the Berrendo Middle School teacher who somehow convinced a 12-year-old shooter to put down his shotgun.
Governor Susana Martinez has hailed John Masterson as a hero.
One of Masterson's friends said Masterson didn't attend Tuesday night's vigil, and "hero" is the last word Masterson would use to describe himself.
But tonight, it is hard to avoid that word.
In the middle of chaos and pain, there were many brave people.
There were many brave heroes, and one name keeps coming up.
John Masterson was directly in the line of fire.
Friends say the Berrendo Middle School social studies teacher probably wouldn't want that word next to his name, but for parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters in Roswell, no other word seems right.
Masterson teaches at the school, but he's also a familiar face in this town; he's also an assistant coach for the Goddard High School soccer team.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 did go to Masterson's house to see if he wanted to say anything, but he did not come to the door.
KOB did speak to Berrendo principal Raymond Miramontes, who asks all New Mexicans to keep their community in their prayers.
