Israel Mendoza is a 7th grader at Sierra Middle School, across town from Berrendo Middle School in Roswell. He says the 12-year-old in critical condition used to be a student there until he transferred last year.

Mendoza says he's praying for his friend who is fighting for his life in Texas.

It's hard for Mendoza to understand what's happened to his friend.

The 12-year-old remains in critical condition one of two Berrendo Middle School students airlifted to a trauma center in Lubbock on Tuesday. The other, 13-year-old Kendal Sanders, is stable.

Mendoza says he doesn’t know why it happened – no one really does – but he has a message for his friend, and for Kendal:

"I hope they make it out of this tragedy."

Many others do, too. At Sierra Middle School, students plan to wear Berrendo black and gold Thursday in solidarity with the students there.
