Colin Hemez of Los Alamos was named the Gatorade New Mexico Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic excellence along with academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the racecourse.

The 6-foot-1, 140-pound senior raced to the Class 4A individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:54.4, leading the Hilltoppers to the state title as a team. Hemez also earned victories at the District 2 Championships and the ATC Everybody Invitational, and finished second at the UNM Lobo Invitational.

Hemez has maintained a 4.22 GPA in the classroom. President of his school’s chapter of the National Honor Society, he has volunteered locally on behalf of the Los Alamos Environmental Club, and helped organize the inaugural field day at Aspen Elementary School.

“Colin is an exceptional runner, student and person,” said Los Alamos co-coach Kathy Hipwood. “His progression from back-of-the-pack seventh-grader in the middle school program to eventual state champion is the result of his incredible self-motivation and dedication to his craft.”

Hemez remains undecided upon a collegiate destination.
