A state lawmaker is hoping to criminalize the act of leaving a child in a car unattended.

There is no law right now that an officer to charge an adult for leaving children in vehicles.  The proposal would make it a petty misdemeanor to leave a child under 10 in the vehicle for longer than five minutes.

New Mexico does have laws that addresses penalties if a child dies or is injured while alone in the vehicle.

The proposed bill was filed by David Gallegos, R-Lee County.
